Shri S. V. Gadgil - An  Engineer Par Excellence by Ujwal Kunte  Civil Engineering was his religion and perfection his God.  Shri S. V.  Gadgil during his lifetime shaped careers of hundreds of engineers and contractors who are leaders in their profession today. His innovative solutions to many iconic buildings stand testimony to his genius. The Civil Engineering Fraternity lost a gem on Saturday April 9, 2016. I first met him at a CONSTRO exhibition where he was called to guide the construction of a complex space structure which served as construction gate and where many engineers had failed. This was his forte as he liked to get involved in structures that were beyond the ordinary. I was a new entrant in the industry, trying my hand in concrete mix design. He took instant liking to me as he felt that what I was doing was need of the industry. He asked me weather I had practical experience in the subject and immediately offered help. He brushed aside my apprehensions of training fees and began our daily morning classes in the outhouse of our bungalow. That was the time I realized what we missed out in college and requested if some of my friends who were contactors & architects could join. He willingly agreed and thus started our journey of knowledge. The flock of students increased and our out house was no longer adequate. Fortunately Shri R T Kulkarni then secretary of Indian Concrete Institute offered us a class room in his office and our education continued. We discussed wide range of topics in construction right from why the angle of tooth is different in saws used by a furniture carpenter and those by shuttering carpenters, why bamboo stick is used in hammers and reason behind the angle of spanners, right up to application of calculus in civil engineering.  He could explain science behind everything.  We realized that his knowledge was so deep and vast that one could go to him with any problem in civil engineering and get a solution. His experience in the field was so varied ranging from Marine Engineering, Diaphragm Walling, Power stations, and Industrial works to Residential & Commercial buildings that nothing was beyond his grasp. His catch phrase was that all civil engineering was about ‘How forces act and How to restrain them’. He urged us to go to basics and never forget theory. His style was to give us an approach and make us work out the solution ourselves.  Our guru was a strict disciplinarian and we learned to keep time and complete the home work assigned to us. Any slippage would invite sharp reprimands no matter whether the student was MD of a company or a seasoned architect.  Shri SV Gadgil passed out as Civil Engineer from VJTI Mumbai   in the year 1952. In spite of being the class topper he bucked the trend of joining the irrigation dept as a direct entry and chose to make a career with private contracting company Shapoorji- Pallonji and then Royal Netherland Harbour works Collaboration.  After working on some iconic buildings and marine works in Mumbai,   he joined British contracting company ‘Cementation’. He was selected for apprenticeship in UK to specialize in underwater construction work. In London he worked on the Black wall tunnel project under river Thames and his employer ‘Cementation’ impressed with his contribution offered him a permanent position in UK. However Shri Gadgil chose to come back to India and started working with ‘Cementation India’ where he rose to become all India Piling head. Eventually he settled in Goa and established a successful contracting company. He also developed interest in horticulture and rose farming   where he won many competitions at flower shows.   He left Goa for better prospects and worked in Bahrain for 5 years.  After coming to India, Shapoorji called him back and he rejoined to help them complete some large industrial projects like steel and cement plants. When he decided to settle in Pune, his friend Shri Anna Saheb Behare requested him to join their flourishing real estate business as construction head. He helped Behare Rathi group  to establish a state of art  civil engineering material testing laboratory ‘Construction and Scientific Research Centre’, a one of kind in Maharashtra in those days.  He won the C M Shah concrete technology prize for outstanding and meritorious work in the field of concrete technology conferred by Institution of Engineers India. He also started his second career as a consultant and trainer shaping careers of young engineers. He was master in formwork systems - design and execution. He has helped many a contractors out of woods by giving practical solutions to complex situations. His speciality was to design formwork system out of materials that contractor already had, thus avoiding expensive purchase of new materials. He had intuitive ability of determining the structural stability of structure, identifying problems even before structural design was proof checked. There were many instances where he identified design problems even after structure was proof checked by top notch consultants or the IITs and the same was accepted and rectified by them. He was ex officio member of Bureau of Indian Standards committee for pile foundations. He had supreme confidence in his own ability and in some cases if the site team had slightest doubt about safety of form work system designed by him, he would stand below it during the concrete work and formwork removal, to give the confidence to the labour and site supervisors. Being a perfectionist there was never an accident at any site under his guidance. Even at the age of 85 he was fit and would easily climb stairs and temporary works on construction sites which many younger engineers would find difficult. In Dec 2011 he was conferred   ‘NIrman Ratna’ a life time achievement award by the Builders Association of India in recognition of his contribution to the construction industry. He had varying interests ranging from music, astrology and astronomy. He could discuss intricacies of Indian classical music as well as western classical music and folk music. He was an accomplished painter and an eternal fan of Madhubala.  He had a die hard spirit that did not give up even when he was detected with late stage cancer. However few weeks before his demise he had given up on life as he had done it all and   given everything he had, to the industry.  ‘Madhubala is waiting for me up there’ he said with a twinkle in his eye when we met him for the last time.
